Stronger at 97

How One Woman’s Decision to Start Strength Training at 86 Changed Everything.

In 2016, Barbara walked through the doors of SIMPLY STRONG for the first time. She was 86 years old and she followed her son’s lead after he had started training and encouraged her to join. It seemed like a small decision at the time. Over the years, it became one that mattered deeply.

Today, Barbara is 97. For the last ten years, she has trained at SIMPLY STRONG once a week, every week, in the same safe, guided environment. The consistency has built something she can feel, and something others can see.

“If I hadn’t joined SIMPLY STRONG, I wouldn’t be here. And I certainly wouldn’t be in the condition I’m in now.”

A Moment That Said It All

During a recent visit with her Nurse Practitioner (NP), Barbara preformed a standard movement assessment. Her health care provider asked her to stand from a seated position and walk across the room. She did it without hesitation, moving with control and confidence. Her NP was visibly surprised and impressed. She told her, she has patients decades younger than her, who struggle to do the same thing.

That moment confirmed what Barbara had already come to know: strength is the foundation of everything.

Independence, Every Day

Strength training consistently helps Barbara move freely around her home without relying on walkers or canes. She lives independently in her own house, without the need for outside support. At 97, that kind of daily freedom is, as she puts it, priceless.

“Strength feels great. I feel very blessed and fortunate to be here at SIMPLY STRONG. I don’t know where I would be without it.”

It’s Never Too Late to Begin

What started as a simple decision to try something new has become a decade-long investment in longevity and quality of life. Improving strength does more than just keeping Barbara moving well in the gym. It has given her confidence, stability, and resilience. It supports the everyday things that matter so much, for example, standing up easily, walking confidently through her home, and continuing to live independently.

Barbara’s story is a quiet but powerful reminder: aging well isn’t about age. It’s about the choices we make, and it’s never too late to make one that lasts.
